Forget the T. Swift squad. One good friend is all you need to be happy and succeed.
“My best friend is the one who brings out the best in me”
Surround yourself with positive people, those who encourage and support you, those you admire and you’ll be far more likely to achieve your goals, FACT! Throughout history friendships have helped shape our society. Without some the world might have been a very different place. So, here’s a round-up of our favourite pairings that prove that some things really are better with friends!
Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus
They may not be in your face with their friendship, but it’s one that goes way back. These two are there for each other through thick and thin. When Ariana found herself on the receiving end of internet trolls at the start of her career Miley was one of the first to defend her friend. And in June 2017 she would prove her loyalty once more when she joined Ariana on stage for the One Love Manchester concert. Performing a duet throughout which the pair shared a sweet hug, Miley said to the crowd, “We have each other’s backs.” And we’d have to agree, they really do!
Kate and Leo
Were it not for James Cameron’s decision to cast both Kate and Leo in his blockbuster movie Titanic, the film might have sunk before it could even make it to the big screen. Both actors have repeatedly stated they could never have made it through the physically and emotionally gruelling shoot without the other. Leo told Oprah in an interview, “If it wasn’t for her making that film we would have been shrapnel by this point. It was the toughest film we ever had to make and we were partners together, we held each other’s hand and supported each other.” And while their on-screen relationship ended in icy tragedy, 21 years on Kate and Leo’s friendship remains one of Hollywoods strongest. Leo even gave Kate away at her 2012 wedding to Ned Rocknroll. Plus, who could forget Kate’s tears of joy when Leo FINALLY won that Oscar?!
Harry, Ron and Hermione
“There are some things you can’t share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them.” J.K Rowling
Harry, Ron and Hermione were the ultimate in squad goals a whole decade before Taylor Swift could even coin the phrase. From hunting horcruxes to helping each other through heartbreak, the three formed an unbreakable trinity that would ultimately see them save the world. And lets face it, without the help of Ron and Hermione Mr Potter would have been on the receiving end of Voldemort’s avada kedavra curse a whole lot sooner!
Selena Gomez and Francia Raísa
Most of us wouldn’t think twice about helping out a friend. But what about risking your life? How many of us could do that? Well, when Selena Gomez found out she needed a kidney transplant, her housemate and best friend Francia Raísa “didn’t even think twice” before going under the knife. Talking about her friend’s selfless act Gomez said, “She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.” Pretty inspiring stuff!
Tolkien and C.S Lewis
The magical worlds of Middle-earth and Narnia would likely never have existed were it not for the meeting of these two self-confessed oddballs at Oxford University. Sharing a love of languages, mythology and storytelling, Tolkien and Lewis quickly struck up a friendship that would forever cement their names in literary history. In a small pub on Oxford’s St Giles Street the men spent hours sharing story ideas and discussing their love of literature. Unsure of his work Tolkien showed Lewis his early draft of ‘Lord of the Rings,’ which Lewis insisted he pursue, while Tolkien inspired Lewis’s ‘The Chronicles of Narnia.’ For years they served as each other’s first and only readers.
Buzz and Woody
Who doesn’t hear ‘You got a friend in me’ whenever they think of Toy Story? But things didn’t get off to the best start for this iconic duo.
When space ranger ‘Buzz Lightyear’ crash landed in Woody’s ‘spot’ and stole owner Andy’s affections, it quickly sparked an explosive rivalry between the two. But over the course of three films we would see these two unlikely friends form an unbreakable bond. Yes, not even a teenage toy torturer with a passion for pyrotechnics, nor a money hungry toy collector or an evil teddy bear dictator could dent the friendship of this cowboy and space ranger.
Kendall Jenner and Cara Delevinge
For most young women these two are friendship goals. Supermodels and BFFs, Cara and Kendall are so close they refer to themselves as CaKe. They even went as far as having CaKe tour T-shirts printed for Glastonbury. And lets face it, who doesn’t love cake?!
Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams
Since meeting on the set of Game of Thrones eight years ago, this duo have become ultimate BFFs. Often referring to each other as ‘my sister’ and ‘soulmate,’ Sophie and Maisie have created their own ship name ‘Mophie,’ and even have matching tattoos of the date they met! When Sophie got engaged to boyfriend Joe Jonas, bridesmaid Maisie was of course amongst the first to offer her well wishes, saying, “Congratulations to my beautiful girlfriend on her engagement. This is just one of MANY life milestones we’ll share.”
Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift
Describing Ed as the James Taylor to her Carole King, these two bonded when Ed opened for Taylor during her 2013 tour. It was a tour that catapulted his career and cemented one of our favourite celebrity friendships. Talking about his bond with the shake it off singer, Ed Said, “She would be there if everything ended for me,” The two went on to write the hit “Everything has changed” and there’s even been talk of a stadium tour with the pair trading off songs. Sign us up for that show!
